Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the funniest TV shows, thanks to its excellent writing and a hilarious and interesting variety of characters. The show has also portrayed amazing character development of its characters - the childish and immature Jake learns caution and restraint, and the serious and stoic Holt learns to relax a little.

Captain Holt is one of the funniest characters despite being completely emotionless and stoic, and he's a lovable mentor who understands and respects his subordinates. However, there have been times when he treats his employees and friends badly. Here are 5 times Captain Holt was a terrible person and 5 times he was the best.

Worst: Gets Mad At Charles For Scratching Gertie

In the season 3 episode, "The Mattress", Holt parks his prized car, Gertie, in two parking spots, his and Charles's. When Charles accidentally scratches Gertie while trying to park his car, Holt gets angry.

He demands that Charles pay for damages, and poor Charles has no choice but to comply. It is only after Gina makes him realize how wrong he was that Holt apologizes to Charles. Holt is very attached to Gertie and is very unreasonable about her.

Best: Helps Rosa Accept Her Sexuality

After Rosa comes out to her parents as bisexual, they seem unwilling to accommodate her as a daughter. So, Jake shows up with the squad to have a family game night with Rosa, and Holt, himself a gay man, comforts Rosa about her sexuality.

He tells her, "Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place."Holt and Rosa have one of the best friendships in the show, treating each other with love and mutual respect.

Worst: Tells Gina Her Dancing is Just A "Hobby"

When Gina invites Holt and Terry to her dance show, both of them fail to show up, which results in Terry having to lie about why he wasn't there. Holt, however, refuses to lie and tells her that her dancing is "just a hobby" and "nobody will pay her for it".

Holt may have had the best interests of Gina at heart and may have tried to be kind, but it was still a hurtful comment. When Gina refuses to dance again after Holt's comment, Terry explains that Gina respects Holt and cares what he thinks. Holt could definitely have framed his words differently.

Jake and Holt have some of the best friendships in the show, and they have come a long way from bickering over ties and imitating each other in robotic voices. Jake learns from Holt to be a better detective and person, and he teaches Holt to live life with fun.

After Jake and Rosa get framed and end up in prison, Holt gets offered a deal with a mafia head who has evidence that would clear them of the charges, and Holt is willing to make that deal, even on his own expense. He says that Jake got him the Nine-Nine job back, and he was willing to take that risk for him since he had his back.

Worst: The Wednesday Incident

One week, when Holt has been in a particularly crabby mood, he treats his squad very harshly, taking away overtime pay and getting even more strict than usual. Jake, using his detective abilities, figures out why - Holt had been mugged sometime earlier and had gotten stabbed.

However, he had not told Kevin about it and had been lying to him daily to cover it up. Although his bad mood was understandable, he should have treated the squad with the respect they had come to earn and told Kevin about the incident.

Best: Lents Pimento Money To Get A P.I. License

In "Mr. Santiago", Amy has invited everyone to her house for a Thanksgiving Party, since her father was coming to visit. Holt spends the entire time glued to the TV screen, watching a dog show. When Adrian shows up, he tells Holt how he has just been fired as a cop for missing work as he was hiding in Uzbekistan (classic Pimento).

Holt suggests becoming a P.I., but Adrian says a license would be too expensive. However, Holt is willing to lend him money for it. It's a sweet gestureon his part, especially since he and Pimento aren't all that close, but it's nice to see Holt help out a fellow detective.

Worst: Throws Terry's Model Train In The Garbage

Holt and Terry are trying to liven things up in the soft room, by putting in model trains for kids. Both model train enthusiasts, they have different opinions on what a model train set should be like - Holt suggests a complex, realistic, and real-world accurate model while Terry just wants to have fun.

Holt disagrees with Terry on everything, and when Terry leaves for a minute, he throws Terry's set in the dustbin. Even worse, he denies throwing it away. For a leader, Holt does seem to be pretty terrible at handling disagreements.

Best: Offers to Help Amy Quit Cigarettes

After Amy decides to quit smoking, everybody offers one or the other solution - Gina says Amy should try meditating, while Terry tells her to dunk her head in ice-cold water every time she craves a smoke, to reboot her system.

Holt, too, offers his help and takes her jogging. Holt is usually quite detached from people's personal lives and often refrains from discussing his own outside of work, but he tells her about his addiction to gambling and even gives Amy advice.

Worst: Gets Offended At Gina Having The Same Type Of Personality Type

In "Windbreaker City", Gina asks Holt to take a personality test for her Psych class. Holt agrees, and is delighted to get the result as I9C3G6 - a leader, with strength, determination, and tenacity. That is until Gina reveals that she too, is the same personality type.

Holt gets somehow offended that he and Gina have the same personality, and spends the rest of the episode trying to invalidate the test. He tries to get her bumped out of I9C3G6.

Best: Tells Jake He's Proud Of Him After His Dad Lets Him Down

Jake has had a rocky relationship with his dad, ever since he cheated on his mom a bunch of times and left. After his dad visits him in "Captain Peralta", Jake is very excited, but his dad just ends up disappointing him and hurting him again.

After telling off his dad and calling him out on everything he's done, he runs into Holt at the bar, who tells him he's proud of him. Jake is visibly touched, and it's a sweet moment since Jake sees Holt as a father figure.
