Why Wear Linen?

Lightweight and breathable, linen is best known for creating cool, airy summer clothing. But it’s not just for the summer – its thermo-regulating properties make it a great choice of fabric all year round. Linen becomes softer and softer the more it is washed and its strength and durability mean that linen pieces are made to last. A perfect antidote to fast fashion!

Linen is good news for the environment too. Grown from the flax plant which is incredibly resilient and can easily be grown without the use of chemical inputs. It can also be grown with far less water than cotton. For more about the benefits of linen and how it compares to cotton have a look at our article Is Linen More Eco Friendly Than Cotton?

The Importance of Choosing Organic

Not all linen is created equal however. Its sustainability credentials depend on how it’s grown, whether chemicals and pesticides are used, and how the fibres are prepared.

The Made-By Environmental Benchmark for Fibres assesses the environmental impact of the most commonly used fibres in the garment industry. It ranks conventional flax (the plant used to create linen) as Class C and organic flax as Class A.

(For more information on sustainable fabrics have a look at our article: What Is the Most Sustainable Fabric? Your Ultimate Guide).

Certified organic linen clothing, although the ideal, can be harder to find. We’ve included several brands that use certified organic linen in our list below. There are also some other certifications to look out for that hold higher environmental and social standards for the production of linen.

Linen Certification

The major certifications to look out for when shopping for sustainable linen include:

GOTS Certified

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres. It includes both ecological and social criteria and is backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. For more on the GOTS certification, see our article here.

MASTERS OF LINEN®

MASTERS OF LINEN® is a registered mark and sign of excellence for linen that has been 100% Made in EUROPE, from field to yarn to fabric. By requiring the use of European Flax® fibre as the raw material (see below), the Masters of Linen® certification addresses sustainable production and social responsibility. However, while European Flax® only covers up to the yarn production stage, Masters of Linen covers the whole production process, right up to the end garment.

European Flax®

The European Flax® label certifies traceability at every step of processing. It provides a guarantee that the flax has been grown with no irrigation, no GM and no waste. The flax must also be naturally retted in the fields and the fibres mechanically extracted and spun into yarn. It also ensures that fibre production complies with International Labour rules. (For more details on how linen is grown and processed see our article here).

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is one of the world’s best-known labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. It means that every component of the article has been tested for harmful substances and the article found to be safe for human health.
